The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has facilitated the sale of Afghan saffron worth $1.4 million in the United States, according to a recent statement by the agency. This development underscores the growing international recognition of Afghan saffron’s unparalleled quality and value.

Saffron traders in Afghanistan are optimistic about the expanding global market for their product. However, they emphasize the need for continued support from international organizations to boost production and exports.

Afghan Saffron’s Economic Impact

The Afghanistan Ministry of Industry and Commerce recently reported that in the first half of 2024, Afghanistan exported approximately $26 million worth of saffron. Spanning 32,500 kilograms, these exports reached countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the UAE, Canada, Russia, and the United States.

Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, the ministry’s spokesperson, shared, “Afghan saffron has established itself in international markets, generating significant revenue and creating opportunities for local farmers and traders.”

Despite these successes, challenges like banking restrictions and difficulties obtaining commercial visas remain hurdles to further expanding Afghan businessmen and exports.

Mohammad Yunus Momand, First Deputy of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, expressed optimism: “Our saffron traders have shown great capability. Two leading companies were recognized with annual export awards. We aim to bring Afghan saffron to the entire world.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Afghanistan’s saffron continues to shine on the global stage, with the country being recognized for producing the world’s highest-quality saffron for the ninth consecutive time by the International Taste Institute in Belgium.

As the second-largest saffron producer globally, Afghanistan is set to harvest nearly 50 tons of saffron this year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock.

The dedication of Afghan farmers and traders, combined with support from international organizations, ensures that Afghan saffron remains a symbol of excellence and a key driver of economic growth.
