Afghanistan has made remarkable strides in saffron cultivation, particularly in the Herat province, which produces nearly 90% of the country’s saffron. Known as the “world’s highest quality saffron,” Afghan saffron has once again been recognized by the International Taste Institute, securing the top position for the ninth consecutive year. This prestigious recognition highlights the dedication of Afghan farmers, exporters, and processors in maintaining exceptional standards.

Afghanistan is the world’s second-largest saffron producer, and with the cultivation spreading across 26 provinces, it has achieved worldwide acclaim. This year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock projects an increase in saffron harvests, with a potential yield of 50 tons, up from 30 tons last year. This growth is a testament to Afghanistan’s rich agricultural heritage and strategic focus on exporting saffron to markets like USA, India, Saudi Arabia, and Spain.

Saffron exports contribute significantly to the Afghan economy. In the past year, saffron worth Afghanistan generated $35 million from saffron, and has been exported to countries worldwide. Prices for saffron in domestic markets reach up to 120,000 Afghani per kilogram, underscoring the premium nature of Afghan saffron in global markets.

Afghanistan’s success in the saffron industry continues to shine, with Herat saffron leading the way as a symbol of excellence in global spice markets. The dedication of Afghan farmers and exporters has ensured that Afghanistan remains a major player in the international saffron trade.
